Basil (Ocimum basilicum) - Depending on the type, the flowers are either bright white, pale pink, or a delicate lavender. The flavor of the flower is milder, but similar to the leaves of the same plant. Basil also has different varieties that have different milder flavors like lemon and mint. Sprinkle them over salad or pasta for a concentrated flavor and a spark of color thatgives any dish a fresh, festive look.

Ingredients:
6 very ripe large tomatoes, peeled, seeded, and cut into bite-sized pieces*
1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 cup fresh basil leaves, cut into strips
1 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
3/4 cup sliced black olives
1/2 cup sliced pimiento-stuffed green olives
4 cloves garlic, minced
Salt to taste
1 teaspoon coarsely-ground pepper
1 (16-ounce) package uncooked linguine pasta

Purple Shisho is the wrap for sushi, but it has multipule uses in cooking. Use it as you would Basil, as in in Pesto. Chop them fine and add them to fresh salads or to any stews and ratatouille!

• in laboratory rats, a comparison of the effects of perilla oil, tournesol oil, olive oil and beef fat showed that perilla oil prevented excessive growth of fatty tissue ;
• in asthma sufferers, perilla oil suppresses certain biochemicals associated with the disease and appears to be beneficial in treating it.
Perilla smells funny, which is no wonder since you will usually find it in cow pastures. Rub leaves on your skin and clothes on hikes to repel ticks. Also a good companion plant for tomatoes.
